With the newest of the E21 cars being over 25 years old a decent unmolested one is getting harder and harder to find. The E30 3 series on the other hand has several advantages over the E21.
1)More made means they are easier to find and many more parts are available
2)You get more engine choices and M50 swaps are so well documented it might as well be a factory option.
3)The E30 has better suspension geometry, especially at the rear, greatly improving handling and reducing drop throttle oversteer
4)Better brakes
5)Factory convertible
6)Cheaper. A decent E30 IS project car can be had for $1500 pretty much anywhere with a little patience
Personally I think the E21 is a much better looking car, but it's hard to justify the extra money for a 4 cylinder, drum brake, tail happy, and older car. BTW the thrust arm shimmy does not apply to E30's or E21's. That's an E12/E28 problem.
