POLL: What's the best performance mod for under $100 bucks?

Let's face it: inexpensive performance is what it's all about (well, maybe not what it's all about, but almost). There is no point owning a cheap car if you're going to spend thousands to bling it up. Besides, pulling one additional pony out of your car's engine without spending mucho coino feels so much better than pulling five additional ponies by spending fat stacks of cash.

At least we at Fun Cheap Cars think so. That's why we're asking you to vote in our latest poll: "What's the best performance mod for under $100 bucks?"

From hi flow air filters to used headers picked up at the auto wreckers (sorry, recyclers), cheap mods abound and can push, pull, and drag extra horses out of any engine. We've only listed a few of the top $100 mods; no doubt you'll have a few suggestions of your own, and we hope you'll post them here in a comment.

Click to vote in the poll in the right column, and we'll post the results when the poll closes.

My money is on the hi flow air filter. Few other cheap mods so easily to boost performance so quickly. Spend $50 on and have money left over for beer, or maybe performance plugs, as well.

Premium Fuel:Uh, no. If you engine doesn't knock on regular using premium will not increase power.

Hi-flo Air Filter:Erm, maybe not? Decrease in restriction? Yes. Big increase in dirt intake? Also yes.

Cold air intake:A cone air filter in the engine bay is not a cold air intake. It is in fact a hot air intake. Most cars made in the last 20 years have pretty decent intakes. Cold air is free mileage and power and the engineers figured that out decades ago. There are good cold air intakes out there though. Mostly they work better because they remove the sound baffles. Louder intake, but more power.

CAT removal:Personally I don't wanna be "that guy" that gives all of motor sports a bad name by stripping off the cat from my car. Running around fueling the paranoia of nutjob greenies is not worth 4.3hp.

Performance Plugs: You mean like splitfires? Please.

Performance Leads:How 'bout some Nology wires to go with your splitfires? That way you've got two bits of useless junk bolted to the engine. Just buy an MSD and move on.

Head Shave: How in the world are you gonna get a machine shop to shave a head properly for under $100? The gasket kit alone will set you back at least $50.

Used Header: Better exhaust velocity and lower restriction means more power. At a higher RPM. I voted for this. But I'd have a hard time putting a lot of faith in a junkyard header less I was real confident I knew what it was.

My two cents:
Performance brake pads. I like Hawk pads. Great stopping power, consistent, not to pricey, and they are rotor friendly.

Brake bias adjuster. Being able to dial up the rear stopping power can make a huge difference in how deep you can go on the binders, especially in the rain.

Short throw shifter. While shifting you are off the power. The less time it takes to shift the faster you go. They also feel better IMHO.

If you needed a clutch anyway you could lighten the flywheel. $100 would cover it and you can remove up to several pounds of rotating mass. I have lightened flywheels in all three of my cars and love the engine response and power.

At this point I've realized my comment is longer then the post so I'll stop.
