Crate engines for your fun cheap car

The situation: your fun cheap car has been driven hard and put away wet for many, many years. The engine is tired. Compression's off a little. She sips a little oil.

Then there's that cold start engine knock that takes longer and longer to quiet down. But that chassis, body, and interior: solid, mint, and just tha' way you want it.

The solution: find yourself a new crate engine, install it over a weekend with a little help from your friends, and breath new life into your fun cheap car.

If you're tried everything else and you want to keep your car, this could be the right decision. Crate engines have been around for years. Companies either buy surplus engines from manufacturers, or fully rebuilt/reconditioned engines from brokers, or they rebuild the engines themselves.

What you get is a brand new engine in a crate (thus the name). Pull out your old engine, drop the new one in, and boom: the heart transplant is complete. While it's not simple to drop in a new engine, it is straightforward and pretty easy if you or someone you know has done it before.

Crate engines range in price from $500-$2500 or more depending on the make and model. But if you've got a lot of time invested in your ride, or you couldn't imagine parting with it even though the engine it past its prime, a crate engine might be the way to go.

And depending on the mind of car you drive, you might even be able to drop in a JDM Japanese-spec or Euro-spec engine, boosting your car's performance even more.

While crate engines cost more than a cheap tune up, they may be a far better option if you plan to keep your fun cheap ride for a few more years.
